From Mexico City by tour

Most visitors book a guided tour. The operator picks you up at your hotel or a central point around 5:30 am and drives you north via the highway. The route goes through Ixmiquilpan, then the final stretch is steep switchbacks down the canyon wall. You arrive at the park around 10 or 11 am. The drive back begins mid-afternoon and you reach Mexico City around 7 or 8 pm. See tours from Mexico City.

From Mexico City by rental car

Rent an economy car in Mexico City. Drive north toward Querétaro on MEX-57D (highway), pass through Ixmiquilpan, then follow signs for Cardonal and Tolantongo. The final stretch winds down the canyon. The drive is considered safe; the hazard is fatigue and the winding descent in the dark on the way back. Most who do this overnight at the park to avoid the night drive. GPS works; the road is well-marked.

From Querétaro

Querétaro to Tolantongo is also about a 4-hour drive, following similar highways north and east through Ixmiquilpan. One tour departs from Querétaro ($191, 12 hours, includes breakfast and pulque tasting). If you rent a car, the drive and logistics are similar to the Mexico City route, but you save an hour to the trailhead.

From Puebla

Puebla to Tolantongo is approximately a 4-hour drive north. You would follow highways toward Querétaro and then the same route as above. Most buses and tour services depart from Mexico City; if you are in Puebla, either arrange transport from there or take a bus to Mexico City first.

Public transit (bus + colectivo)

A first-class bus runs from Mexico City to Ixmiquilpan (about 2 hours). At Ixmiquilpan, catch a colectivo (shared van) heading to Cardonal or Tolantongo. Colectivos run irregularly and fill up before leaving. The problem is timing: if you leave early and arrive in Ixmiquilpan by noon, you have a few hours at the park before an evening colectivo departs. Most transit travellers overnight in Ixmiquilpan or at the park itself.

Nearest airports

Mexico City has two airports: MEX (Benito Juárez, central Mexico City) and AIFA (Felipe Ángeles, northeast of the city). Both are approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car from Tolantongo once you clear the city. If you are flying in, land at MEX or AIFA, rent a car or book a tour that includes airport pickup, and head north. See closest airport to Tolantongo.

Insider tip

The road is safe. The real hazard is the four-hour drive each way and fatigue on the return. A tour handles that. If you DIY, overnight at the park and return fresh the next morning.

Book a tour with pickup from your hotel

The simplest way to visit Grutas de Tolantongo is a guided tour — a live guide, breakfast and logistics handled, and the canyon in full daylight, with free cancellation.
