In short: Yes, for the river. The thermal pools have some rocky spots, but the river bottom is definitely rocky and slippery. Cheap water shoes are sold inside the park for about 50–100 MXN, cash only. Bring your own or buy on-site.

The river bottom

The thermal river has a rocky, uneven bottom covered with smooth stones and pebbles. Walking barefoot is possible but uncomfortable and risky — slips and stubbed toes are common. Water shoes (simple rubber sandals with grip soles) make wading safe and comfortable. Reviewers like Seannah recommend buying them on-site if you do not have your own.

Where to get them

Cheap water shoes are sold by vendors inside the park for about 50–100 MXN, cash. They are basic rubber sandals, nothing fancy, but they work. You can also bring a pair from home or buy them in Mexico City before the tour if you prefer a specific brand.

The pools

The cliffside pools have some rocky areas but are generally walkable barefoot if you are careful. Most people wear water shoes in the pools too because it is safer.

Book a Tolantongo tour
